Nordic Lullaby (2024)- solo oboe with electronics

The melodic content of this piece is based on an old Norwegian ballad entitled Bendik og Årolilja. The oldest available record of this ballad can be found in the Smithsonian’s Folkway Recordings album Norwegian Folk Songs, a collection of Scandinavian folk ballads compiled and recorded in 1958. The ballad is actually a ridderviser, or “Knight song”, and not a lullaby, but the arrangement style and electronics draw inspiration from other Norwegian lullabies, such as Drømte mig en drøm i nat, Vargsången, and Byssan lull

The story in the original Norwegian ballad tells of two forbidden lovers; Bendik, a poor man, and Årolilja, a princess. Upon finding out about their affair, Årolilja’s father, the king, sentences Bendik to death. Årolilja dies shortly after of a broken heart. They are buried on opposite sides of the churchyard. From their graves, two trees began to grow, and grew so tall that their branches intertwined over the church roof, a sign of the forbidden lovers’ irrevocable bond.

The original ballad contains around fifty-eight verses. Most modern editions whittle this epic tale down to anywhere between ten and four verses.

  1. Bristlecone Elegy 5:30

  2. Ouzel Scherzo 3:30

This two-movement trio is inspired by two scenic locations in the Colorado Rockies. The first, Bristlecone Elegy, is inspired by Grouse Mountain Overlook in Mueller State Park. The overlook, while boasting amazing views of the Pikes Peak area, is home to the rare bristlecone pine tree for which this movement is named. The second movement, Ouzel Scherzo, is named for the Ouzel Falls hiking trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, a hike which boasts three spectacular waterfalls. The falls and rivers are frequented by ouzels, also called dippers, a type of bird that forages for its food in running water.
